Pdf Summary
Leanne Galligan’s presentation, “Just Because You Can… Doesn’t Mean You Should,” focuses on how leaders can develop others by knowing when to step back. Leaders often take over because they care, can work faster, or trust their own methods—but doing so may solve an immediate problem while limiting someone else’s growth and creating future leadership gaps.

Delegation is not avoiding responsibility. It gives team members opportunities to build judgment, confidence, and a track record, while strengthening the organization beyond the leader’s direct involvement. Leaders should define the desired outcome, set clear guardrails, explain which decisions employees can make and when to seek guidance, then allow them to do the work. They delegate responsibility while retaining accountability.

The presentation also encourages leaders to allow manageable mistakes. Not every imperfect decision requires intervention; reflection and another opportunity can turn mistakes into learning. Support employees throughout the process by expressing trust, asking what they observe, offering help when needed, and discussing what they learned afterward. Psychological safety makes it possible to stretch toward high expectations without lowering them.

Before stepping in, leaders should ask whether the task or risk truly requires their involvement—or whether they are intervening simply because they can do it faster or their way. A practical next step is to entrust an emerging leader with meaningful work, clarify expectations and boundaries, resist taking it back, and debrief the learning as well as the outcome.

A leader’s legacy is not only what they accomplish personally, but also the people they help become more capable.
