Ankle Brace Air Stirrup Remove the brace from the packaging and loosen the velcro straps. Looking at the bottom foot plate and at the patient's foot, determine if it needs to be extended and adjust the width of the brace by pulling down. Have the patient place their foot on your knee and apply the brace medial and lateral to the patient's ankle. Adjust the velcro straps snug to fit, trimming any excess strap with scissors. Examine the brace to make sure it is fitting adequately. Have the patient put their shoe on with the ankle brace. Ask the patient to stand and ambulate, noting any discomfort, and adjust the brace if needed.
