Video Summary
The webinar was the final session of AAOE’s “Mastering the Changes from Code Updates to Compliance” series and focused on trauma coding, with a strong emphasis on accurate documentation and correct CPT/ICD-10 reporting. The speaker reviewed fracture care, including how treatment method, fracture location, displacement, and manipulation determine coding. She explained the differences between global fracture care packages and itemized billing, especially for non-manipulative treatment, and stressed that emergency department physicians usually should not bill global fracture codes unless they perform restorative treatment.

The presentation also covered open fracture debridement, external fixation, compartment syndrome, percutaneous and open fracture repair, and the use of modifiers such as 57, 58, 78, and 25. She highlighted payer and NCCI rules, especially the same-day bundling limitations and when separate E&M services may be reported. Additional topics included casting/bracing supplies, traumatic wound management, skin substitutes, wound vacs, drug delivery devices, and trauma-related injections.

A major theme was that detailed documentation is essential: the exact fracture site, wound depth, debridement level, injection site, medication dosage, lot number, and medical necessity all matter. The speaker also noted that many trauma cases are staged over time, so coding must follow each encounter accurately as treatment progresses.

The session ended with appreciation for the speaker, organizers, and sponsor, and encouraged attendees to use the program on demand and share it with colleagues.
